Kalvarienberg Prüm - Explosionskrater

Kalvarienberg Prüm - Explosionskrater

Prüm

Explosion crater Kalvarienberg

There was an ammunition depot in the tunnel system of this mountain. 30 percent of the city of Prüm was destroyed on July 15, 1949, when a fire broke out and the depot exploded - 500 tons of explosives, once deposited to blow up the West Wall fortifications, tore a crater 190 meters long and 90 meters wide into the mountain. At that time there were 12 dead, 60 injured, 76 destroyed and 161 damaged houses. July 15, 1949 is still called "Black Friday" by the people of Prüm today. The explosion crater, which is still visible today, is one of the largest man-made. A memorial cross on the Kalvarienberg commemorates the victims of the disaster. There are hiking trails, benches, a playground and information boards all around the Kalvarienberg. www.ferienregion-prüm.de
