Fischbach-Drees bei Birresborn

Birresborn

The Romans already knew and appreciated the fresh water of the Birresborn Dreese for its good flavour and healing properties. Even the place name Birresborn (Latin ‘Birgis burias’, meaning ‘good spring’) refers to a water place or well.

The magnesium-calcium mineralisation here comes from sandstone and claystone as well as overlying volcanic rock. The high content of carbonic acid originates from the Eifel volcanism and gives the water the name ‘Säuerling’ (acidulous). A total of five springs are known in Birresborn, several of which were of great economic importance. Today, drinking water can be taken from the Lindenquelle and the Fischbach-Drees.

Approach:

From Gerolstein westwards to Lissingen via the B410, then in Lissingen turn left onto the L24 towards Birresborn. Follow the road to Birresborn, in the village turn right onto Kopper Straße, L30. The Drees is on the left, opposite the car park behind the village exit.
