Mayen

The small but beautiful hiking path in the Grubenfeld of Mayen is the perfect idea for animal enthusiasts. The circular hiking path, which is in close touch with the nature, informs about different bats of the world. The former mining area in Mayen is home to 17 of Germany's 25 native species, totaling more than 50,000 bats. This unique habitat is the largest bat hibernation site in Germany.

The so-called "Shaft 700" is also located here. This shaft served the miners as an entrance to the mine and is now accessible to visitors via a staircase. In summer, this shaft becomes a meeting place for countless bats from all over Central Europe, giving visitors a glimpse into the lives of these fascinating imps of the night.  With a bit of luck, you can watch some bats sleep - since we all know these little creatures are nocturnals.

Also visible on this hiking path is the open-face mine, where you hike around. You can collect a lot of information on this way. There are 15 different info points, 3 large information boards, a rebuild knapper hat, 7 benches and 2 large insect hotels.
In this way you can make yourself a nice day in the Grubenfeld of Mayen with many resting opportunities.
