Landesblick Meerfelder Maar

Landesblick Meerfelder Maar

Meerfeld

Above the largest Maar funnel in the Eifel, the Meerfelder Maar, you can already see a viewpoint, the Landesblick, from far away. In front of it, you look down on at least 30,000 years of natural history, into a very large and wide Maar funnel. The Maar only occupies about half of the space in the Maartrichter. Nestled against the steep southern slopes of the other half is the idyllic village of Meerfeld, not only worth a look, its restaurants with their excellent cuisine will also spoil your palate.

Discover the "Landesblick" viewing platform, perched high up on the crater rim, which reveals an unforgettable view of the surrounding countryside and the Meerfeld maar. The effort of the climb to 515 metres above sea level is worth it, because the far-reaching view in all directions is fantastic. Benches below the tower are excellent for a picnic during a hike.

These hiking trails lead past the Meerfelder Maar: Heimatspur LW Lava Trail, VulkaMaar Trail, Geo-Route Maarmuseum Manderscheid, Volcano Trail (Eifelverein No. 13).

Schalkenmehrener Maar

Especially if you visit the GesundLand Vulkaneifel in summer, a detour to the Schalkenmehren Maar is a must. Located directly at the village of the same name and opposite the Weinfelder Maar, the Schalkenmehrener Maar is one of the three Dauner Maars and offers a wonderful backdrop for an extended walk or an extensive hike. If you look closely, you can see that the Schalkenmehren Maar was once a double maar, formed by volcanic activity around 20,000 to 30,000 years ago. But the tuffs of the western maar filled up the eastern maar funnel, so that nothing can be seen of the second maar today, except for the fen vegetation that has spread in this area. Take a little discovery tour and observe numerous animal and plant species along the way!
