"Maibusch" Ulmen
Ulmen
Experience Point No. 2 on the "Hexen, Henker & Halunken" hike takes you deep into the Maibusch – to a crime scene from times long past.
In the Maiwald, where livestock was once driven due to the meager pastures of the Eifel, a dark crime occurred in 1719. Station 2 marks the site of the trail's first criminal case: Somewhere in the area known as the "Marx-Loch," two local parishioners from Ulmen killed the local priest, Johann Schweißthal. The priest was known to be domineering and quarrelsome, yet the details of the crime remain shrouded in silence, omitted from old records. A truly ominous case, we know only that the two perpetrators were brothers who were later excommunicated. Border disputes may have been the underlying cause of the conflict.
From here, the hike continues to the next point, the "Wingertstälchen".
