The millstone caves of the Rother Kopf
Gerolstein
The millstone caves are located northwest of Gerolstein, between the districts of Müllenborn and Roth. For those who want to get really deep insights into the interior of the volcano Eifel, a visit to the Mühlstein caves is a must.
Millstones were mined here from the 13th century onwards. Because the cold winter air collects and stays in the caves, the caves are also called ice caves. Please take care of warm clothing as well as sturdy footwear and a flashlight. The average temperature in the cave is about 6 degrees.
Equipped with a flashlight, you can get an impression of the hardship the stonemasons had with the extraction of the millstones in the millstone cave. The stones were almost completely carved out.
In the volcanic Eifel there are several millstone caves, which is due to the fact that the rock here was particularly suitable for the grinding process.
