Nationalparkforstamt Eifel
Schleiden
Nature is finding its way back into its own cycle of growth and decay in the large protected area located 65 kilometers southwest of Cologne. The young Eifel National Park is still regarded internationally as a "development national park". Protected areas in this category have 30 years to leave at least three quarters of their area to its own devices. By 2034 at the latest, "let nature be nature" will apply to a large part of the total area of around 110 square kilometers in the Eifel National Park, as in all national parks worldwide.
Discover the primeval forests of tomorrow. Wild cats, black storks and over 1,900 other endangered animal and plant species that researchers have already identified in the national park live here. Enjoy unique views of the Rur-, Ober- and Urftsee reservoirs. Relax as you hike through romantic stream valleys and impressive beech forests on the Wilderness Trail, for example. In spring, you will be greeted by carpets of yellow wild daffodils. The Dreiborn plateau around Vogelsang is not only radiant when the broom is in bloom. In the fall, the deer rut is a special experience, and in winter, animal tracks are particularly easy to spot.
