31 - Unterwegs in Höfen: Höfener Heckenweg
Monschau
Right at the start of the hedge trail, opposite the national park gate, we discover the village biotope with its beautiful picnic area. Naturally enclosed by beech hedges, a small natural oasis has been created here that arouses our curiosity. The insect hotel, wild flowers, herbs and babbling brook; we spontaneously decide to take a coffee break from our rucksacks to take it all in.
And then it's off to Weiherstraße. We marvel at the impressive beech hedges, some of which are up to 6 m high, 1 m deep and up to 30 m long. We can well understand that the hedges protect the buildings from wind, rain and snow, as the houses and gardens are barely visible from the path. And while we are still wondering how such hedges are maintained and trimmed, we notice the large arches for the courtyard entrances and real window openings to provide the houses behind them with light.
An information board tells us that some of the elaborately and lovingly restored half-timbered houses are over 300 years old. We particularly like the thatched roofs and farm gardens.
The closer we get to the edge of the village, we discover that the hedges along the meadows and pastures look completely different. Another information board tells us about the special features of these landscape hedges. The best view of this cultural landscape is from the "Eifel view" on the southern edge of the village.
The overview maps along the 5 km route help us to find our way. For people with limited mobility, such as older people, families with baby carriages and wheelchair users, there is also an easy, shortened 3 km circular route. Further information about the hedgerows is also available on a flyer, but we are thinking of taking part in a guided tour of the hedgerows in the near future.
Back at the national park gate, we enjoy the view from the outdoor terrace of the Bistro Alte Molkereiwith a cappuccino and cake to round off a beautiful day.
