EifelSchleife Adlerblick
Hellenthal
On this hike, you will get up close to eagles circling in the air above you - with a view from the Oleftalsperre dam or during a visit to the bird of prey station in Hellenthal.
The hike starts by "climbing" the Oleftalsperre dam. You will be rewarded with fantastic views over the reservoir and the surrounding hilly landscapes of the Eifel and the Oleftal valley. The Oleftalsperre serves to protect the surrounding communities from flooding and to produce drinking water. It was built in the mid-1950s and the wall has a unique appearance due to its so-called pillar cell construction. The area around the dam is characterized by alder gallery forests, tall herbaceous meadows and bear's foot meadows.
A highlight of the hike is the bird of prey station and the Hellenthal wildlife enclosure - if you are traveling with children, you should definitely plan a visit here. From the fist-sized pygmy owl to the majestic Andean condor, you can see many species of birds of prey and owls here. The birds are presented in free flight several times a day. If you keep a close eye on the sky, you can also spot eagles & co. in the air during the hiking tour.
Young visitors in particular can look forward to seeing goats, sheep, donkeys and pot-bellied pigs in the wildlife enclosure.
