Hedgerow route
Eicherscheid
The Heckenlandroute (literally ‘hedge-land route’) takes you uphill and downhill through varied green landscapes. Not only will you walk alongside the River Rur in the bottom of the valley, but also enjoy wonderful elevated views of the Rurtal valley itself. This varied route offers you both.
The Heckenlandroute is laid out as a circular trail. You start in Eicherscheid and also return there.
The day-long tour takes you to along the left and right bank of the Rur, through the cultivated landscape of the Monschauer Heckenland and over the uplands of the Eicherscheider Hochfläche plateau. Here you will walk through the ancient landscape of ‘Flurhecken’, or ‘lane hedges’. You will be rewarded with a view stretching for kilometres at high-up vantage points such as the Weißes Kreuz (‘White Cross’) or the sloping path at Dedendorn. Here you can take a break and enjoy the far-reaching views of the wild, romantic Rurtal valley.
You will come past steep, wooded slopes and distinctive rocks such as the Uhusley rock formation, walk through quaint villages, and can perform somersaults on fertile meadows.
In the Monschauer Land, you will find the typical hedged landscape for which the region is famed even beyond its borders. Hedges surrounding the local houses, marking the local lanes and towering many metres tall are distinctive features along your route.
The Heckenlandroute walk over hills and through valleys is a challenging but manageable route. Nowhere else than in and around Eicherscheid can you experience the varied nature and unique cultivated landscape so intensely. Wonderful views stretching for kilometres invite you to dream and relax.
