Maars and Thermal Springs Trail
Ulmen
The starting point for this route is the Ulmener Maar in Ulmen. From here, the path descends into the lush Ueßbach valley. It sets the direction and the speed. It could also be re-named the “valley of the mills”, with the Heckenmühle, Wollmerather Mühle and Demerather Mühle mills along the way. During this hiking tour, there are plenty of views of the Eifel landscape on offer. Sometimes, the trail passes along velvety smooth meadow paths, and sometimes over rocky ascents. From Kennfus onwards, the excitement mounts, with dizzying paths and steep rocks in the deep Ueßbach valley. Then you can enjoy the reward at the Volcanic Eifel thermal baths in Bad Bertrich, with revitalising water for tired limbs! It is the only Glauber salt thermal bath in Germany, with a water temperature of 32 degrees.
Due to its length - around 35 kilometres - this trail is suitable as a 2-day tour. We recommend that you divide the route into the following two sections:
Stage: Ulmen (Postplatz) - Lutzerath | Length: 18.2 km | Walking time: 6 hours
Stage: Lutzerath- Bad Bertrich | Length: 17.0 km | Walking time: 5.5 hours
To create a 4-day tour, combine this route with the Hochkelberg panorama trail.
