The leisure trails in the Eifel slow down and tell a story full of action at particularly exciting places in nature.
The Vulcano Trail is one of the leisure trails and runs for around 26 kilometers around Schalkenmehren in the Volcanic Eifel. The Vulcano Trail is divided into two circular routes for shorter day hikes:
The eastern, 16-km-long "Määrchenroute" from Ellscheid and the western, 16-km-long "Maarroute" from Schalkenmehren.

On the "Fairy Tale Route", the more than 16-kilometre-long circular hiking tour of the Vulcano Trail between the picturesque villages of Ellscheid and Steineberg, you can feel the drama of Mother Earth over thousands of years: fiery lava met cool water, resulting in huge steam explosions. Life returned, dense forests emerged, animals conquered the terrain and finally humans.
The Muße hike on the fairytale route is an adventure trip to the thickly moss-covered remains of a Celtic ring wall hidden in the forest and to the 28-metre-high Vulcano information platform observation tower on the Steineberger Ley. It leads to the silting maar called Mürmes, a boggy paradise for rare plants and animals, and to the Demerather Drees, one of the Eifel's volcanic acidulous wells. It is literally a "fairytale" journey through time, accompanied at selected stations by the leitmotif of the garden fence - to look over, lean on, ponder, chat, read, take a break.

Note on the signposting of the hiking tour:
First follow the yellow trail logo "Vulkaneifel-Pfade - Vulcano-Pfad". Shortly before the A1 highway, the white signpost "Vulkaneifel-Pfade - Vulcano-Pfad Kurzroute" leads south to the "Määrchenroute" (round trip: Ellscheid).
