Volcano Summit Trail
Daun
The Volcano Summit Trail (“Vulkangipfel-Pfad”) leads over around 31 kilometres in two stages over the volcano summits of the Eifel. Right at the start of the first stage, you are taken up onto the “Riemerich”, which is then half encircled by the route. Impressive boulders are strewn alongside the path as the tour continues. The route passes along stream valleys and through varied forest and meadow landscapes up to 620 metres above sea level. An incredible view invites you to stop and gaze into the distance. A cultural highlight at the end of the first stage is the Dreiser Burg castle dating from 1579 (privately owned). On the second day, it’s an easy walk between meadows and fields along a range of hills with wonderful views into the distance. The Ernstberg, the highest hill in the Volcanic Eifel, which is just below the 700 altitude mark at 698.80 metres, rises up to the right. The trail continues down and uphill until you reach Daun.
