Experience the Rur valley from its most beautiful side: the hiking tour on the Buntsandsteinroute leads along narrow paths in 2 day stages from Kreuzau to the Urftsee dam wall
Don't let yourself be rushed, marvel at the rocks, follow the gentle waves on the water and hike through the forests of the Eifel - the Buntsandstein route invites you to enjoy an intensive nature experience.
The first stage begins in Kreuzau. The gently curving paths along the Rur floodplains are enchanting at the start of the hiking trail and soon open up views of the glistening waters of the Obermaubach reservoir. The tension mounts, because surely the red sandstone cliffs that gave this route its name must soon appear? Once more around the bend and then they are there: the bizarre rock formations. Different layers and weathering tell of the young epoch of the earth's history. Depending on the time of day, the rock formations always appear in a different light, glowing red and combining to form a unique symphony of colors.
Small paths connect the striking rocks and lead to fantastic views, such as from Christinenley to Nideggen Castle - a detour to the castle is well worthwhile. In the middle of the Eifel National Park , the path leads up to the "Black Cross", the soft forest floor pampers your feet, the leaves of the trees rustle gently in the light wind and then the refreshing water appears again: you have reached the Urft reservoir.
