Die besondere Sonntagsreihe: Meerfelder Maar
Apr 27, 2025 - Oct 26, 2025
Meerfeld
The Meerfelder Maar is the largest maar in the Western Eifel, but only part of it is filled with water. The village of Meerfeld lies within the Maar funnel. The Meerfelder Maar is of particular importance in climate research. Over the course of thousands of years, the Maar lake was filled with sediments many metres thick. Drill cores of these sediments have provided important insights into climate history. In 2008, the Meerfelder Maar was designated by the International Union of Geosciences as a regional type locality for defining the Pleistocene/Holocene boundary in Earth history.
