Discover & Experience Geography and Earth History
Jul 6, 2025 - Sep 28, 2025
Bad Bertrich
The Ueßbach is a typical stream of the Eifel region. It has deeply cut into the greywacke and slate of the surrounding mountains in its narrow valley. Stretching 49 kilometers from the Mosbrucher Weiher through the Vulkaneifel to its confluence with the Alfbach, it forms a valuable habitat for animals and plants. The steep slopes along its banks have an inclination of up to 70 degrees. Geography, geology, and ecology can be experienced up close here. We start our expedition from Bad Bertrich upstream and embark on a journey through geological time and history: from the tropical sea 400 million years ago, through volcanic eruptions tens of thousands of years ago, to the stream valley ecosystem of today. We explore the Elfengrotte and discover the Entersburg on its plateau high above the Ueßbach, a place of robbers, knights, and Romans. The Ueßbach Valley is full of history and stories. Geological highlights give us an impression of the forces that shaped this landscape. The ecology of this very special habitat awakens our spirit of discovery. Join me on this expedition into distant times and a fascinatingly beautiful habitat between water, rocks, and forests.
