Orchideen und weitere botanische Highlights des Salmwaldes

Salm

The Salmwald is the largest contiguous forest area in the Vulkaneifel region. What many do not know is that a variety of botanical treasures are hidden in the Salmwald. Why is that? The geological substrate of the Salmwald is partially composed of limestone – the so-called "Salmer Kalkmulde." The calcium-rich substrate is the prerequisite for the occurrence of beech forests with herbs like woodruff and wild garlic, and individual smaller tree-free areas with species-rich calcareous semi-dry grasslands and wet meadows with over 15 orchid species documented in the area.

If you feel like discovering some of these botanical beauties, I will guide you on my approx. 5-6 km long hike to these hidden locations. A camera should definitely not be missing from your backpack. Sturdy footwear and rain protection are recommended, and please bring your own refreshments.

Der Westwall im Oberen Kylltal
May 14, 2025 - Sep 17, 2025

The Siegfried Line was a military defense system on the western border of the German Reich that was around 630 km long and consisted of over 18,000 bunkers, tunnels and countless trenches and anti-tank barriers. It ran from Kleve on the Dutch border southwards to the Swiss border. The complex was built by the National Socialists between 1936 and 1940. Our hike leads to numerous remnants (bunkers, anti-tank ditches, hump line) of the Westwall.
