May 1, 2025
Oberbettingen
On May 1st, the traditional Volcano Day takes place. This year, the starting point is the community center in Oberbettingen. From there, the approximately 8-kilometer experiential hike begins, which will make nature lovers, geology enthusiasts, and curious explorers' hearts race.
The diverse route leads through idyllic Eifel forests, picturesque meadows and fields, past historical quarries and impressive volcanoes, as well as along babbling brooks and waterways. The highlight of the tour? The fascinating discovery site of the “Eifeosaurus”. Hikers can look forward to impressive insights, including the former Wolfskaul quarry, where an extraordinarily well-preserved vertebrate skeleton was discovered in 1904: the Eifeosaurus triadicus, affectionately named “Bettie”. This prehistoric inhabitant of the Middle Buntsandstein period lived about 235 million years ago and provides a vivid impression of times long past. The discovery site and its exciting history give the hike its distinctive character. With a hiking time of about three hours, the way is suitable for both experienced nature lovers and curious explorers who wish to experience the beauty and uniqueness of the Vulkaneifel up close.
After the eventful tour, a hearty meal awaits the diligent hikers at the community center to conclude Volcano Day in a delightful and sociable round.
To ensure a pleasant and safe experience on Volcano Day, it is recommended to wear clothing suited to the hike and outdoor conditions.
